It’s Bigger Than a Dress | Dressember 2016

Dressember 2016

Dressember 2016

“Because of the woman wearing it, a dress can change the world.”
-Blythe Hill; founder of Dressember

So, it’s happening. I am going to be wearing a dress every day in December to raise money and awareness for the victims of human trafficking and for the abolition of modern-day slavery.

This challenge uses fashion to advocate for women who’ve been exploited for their femininity. When we as women take on the challenge of wearing a dress for the 31 days of December, we are advocating for the inherent dignity of all women and together we are locking arms to face one of the greatest injustices of our time.

The Heart of Dressember is Freedom – that every woman has the right to live a vibrant and autonomous life. All funds raised will be going to the International Justice Mission and A21 that are human rights organizations that work to rescue victims of slavery, sexual exploitation, and other forms of violent oppression.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” -Matthew 5:16

Let’s be the light that shines for Him and let all good works we do be done in His name and for His glory. There will be light and we can help, one day, one dress, and one dollar at a time.

Last year was my first-ever time participating in Dressember and it was a life-changing experience for me. When I first heard of how human trafficking was still such a major issue today, I felt like there was nothing I could do to help. Until I discovered Dressember and I realized that there were ways that even someone like me could help bring awareness to help end injustice. Here are some of the snapshots from my Instagram last year…

Dressember 2015 Snapshots

Last year, it was my goal to raise $500 and, thanks to the help of family and friends, I raised $715. This year I’m dreaming big. Maybe I’m crazy. But this year, I want to raise $2,000. That’s a huge leap from $715, but I’m planning on doing my part and trusting God to bless this campaign and to take care of the rest. By His grace, this message will reach more people and more funds will be given to help rescue the victims of human trafficking today.

Collectively, Dressember advocates almost reached our goal of raising $1 million last year and ended the campaign with $924,142. Wearing a dress every day for a month may seem like a little thing, but when you’re working together as a team, a real difference can be made.

It’s as Shakespeare wrote in The Merchant of Venice, “How far that little candle throws his beams!” One small candle can bring a tremendous amount of radiant light.

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

Would you consider donating to the cause or joining my team and taking part in this challenge too?

You can sponsor my mission to fight human trafficking by donating to my Dressember fundraiser page. All donations support the work done by A21 and the International Justice Mission (IJM) who work to fight human trafficking and work towards the rescue and rehabilitation of victims. Please give even if you can only spare a dollar. Every little bit can help save a life!

The end goal is a big dream of abolishing modern day slavery and bringing dignity back to so many oppressed women in this world.

Did you know Dressember is using 15% of what is donated this year for their own PR and administrative costs? Just thought I would let you know all the money does not go to IJM and A21.
