Colorado is one of my favorite places. The Rocky Mountains especially. Growing up, my family’s favorite vacation was a road trip from California to Colorado. Once I married Austin, I looked forward to the day when I could share those memories with him and create new ones of our own. For Labor Day weekend, we were able to take a road trip from Omaha to Colorado and spend the weekend with friends in Colorado Springs; exploring Denver together and hiking in the Rocky Mountains.
On the day we spend in the Rocky Mountains, we hiked to Bierstadt Lake and then onward to Bear Lake. We hiked the trail backwards rather than hike in the direction that was recommended (which meant uphill rather than downhill) but we didn’t mind. The day was gorgeous, the skies were clear, and the weather was perfect.
We were ready to spend the day in the mountains.
Our total trek ended up being about six miles hiking with wading barefoot in the icy clear waters of Bear Lake at the end. My camera started acting terribly persnickety towards the end of the hike (seriously folks, don’t take auto focus for granted – you don’t realize how awesome it is until you have to use manual focus for every shot) But I still somehow managed to collect some snapshots of favorite memories from our time in the Rocky Mountains.
If there is anything more peaceful than spending time in the mountains, I’ve yet to find it. The only thing that rivals it is a long walk along a quiet beach.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Have you ever been to the Rocky Mountains?
Where’s your favorite place to hike? I’d love to hear about it!
