Packing for the Badlands + Black Hills

Packing for the Badlands and Black Hills

Packing for the Badlands and Black Hills

Since Austin and I just moved to Omaha, Nebraska, we decided to take a road trip to Badlands National Park and the Black Hills of South Dakota for a weekend camping trip. Since our tent is currently in storage and we don’t have it with us during our nomadic journeys, we got a camp site at Cedar Pass Campground and made plansย to just park and sleep in our rental car. Packing for the Badlands was a fun venture and, since I love peeking into others’ travel bags, here’s a glimpse into mine.

Here’s a look at everything I packed for our weekend in the Badlands and Black Hills…

I use myย Medium BAGGUย to pack toiletries and self care supplies.

This little bag holds everything and I love how easy it is to see inside of so there’s no rummaging. (I also adore the handle that keeps it from having to be set on wet countertops.) Inside this one is my rosewater toner, dry shampoo, natural deodorant, hair brush, shampoo bar (in its case), moisturizer stick, all-purposeย goop, toothpaste, sunscreen, and lunette menstrual cup.

I certainly don’t typically put on a full face of makeup while camping, but since my everyday routine takes about five minutes anyway and I only have a very small makeup collection, the whole bag comes with me. (My all-natural makeup is from Alima Pure, Zuzu Luxe, 100% Pure, and Mineral Fusion.)

For clothing, I had to pack for warm days but also cold camping nights (and also a chilly tour of Wind Cave National Park.) As a result, I brought a total of 15 items.

  • I love how organized your packing is! I just throw everything in a bag before we leave.

    • I used to just throw things in my bag too, but since we live on the road now, I’ve been forced to become organized. It has ended up making things a lot easier.

  • I am such a bad packer, and I tend to pack wayyyyy too much, so way to go!

    • Hello Kristin! I was a serious overpacker in my previous life. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Having less always seems scary when you set out, but I always end up with more than I need.

  • Leah Hall

LOVE that elephant bag!! The Badlands are such a cool place to visit. I grew up In North Dakota so I’ve been there a number of times.

    • Thanks Chrissa! That elephant bag makes me smile every time I see it and it’s so handy for travel. I haven’t been to North Dakota – how does it differ from South Dakota?

      • Chrissa – Physical Kitchness

Welllll I would say SD has much more to see! The western part of ND has the Badlands much like SD, but the rest of the state is pretty flat!

        • Haha. Gotcha! ๐Ÿ˜€ Have you been to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in ND? It’s on my list since I want to visit all the parks, but I don’t know anything about it.

  • I’ve never been there. Was it fun? Oh I’m sure it was. I’ll have to go someday and I’ll use your list as a guide for what I should pack. That elephant bag is soooo cute ๐Ÿ™‚

    • It was so much fun! Be on a lookout tomorrow with my post of photos from the trip. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Glad you like the elephant bag! It’s a favorite of mine. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Your toiletry bag is so cute. I love the print. Speaking of the Badlands. Have you seen the movie? It stars Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen. It’s a crime drama from the 70s that takes place in the area.

    • I love the print too. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve never seen the movie and actually had no idea that it existed. I’ll have to look it up and see if it’s on Netflix. Thanks for the recommendation!

  • Iryna

Looks like you’ve all the essentials! Have a great time camping!
