Salvation Mountain

Nestled deep within the lower desert of Southern California, east of the Salton Sea, you can discover Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain. Leonard created his Salvation Mountain as a tribute to God. This is his way of sharing the message of “God Is Love.”

After our weekend in Palm Springs, we made the drive through the expanse of the California desert to finally visit this iconic location. Salvation mountain was created using adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. Leonard Knight spent over 30 years of his life dedicated to this project. Once inside, you are struck with the detail and dedication that went into this beautiful monument and there is a type of reverence that everyone seemed to respect.

  • Salvation Mountain has been on my to-go list for a very long time. I believe that once a year, volunteers go in and repaint some of the places that have worn down — I would love to be part of that effort. Whatever your beliefs, I think we can all appreciate the love and effort that Leonard Knight put into his masterpiece.

And it’s also a dream (long shot dream) of mine to also create some kind of landscape architecture. What a beautiful place this is.
