“Oh, but California; California, I’m coming home;
I’m going to see the folks I dig.”
Joni Mitchell | California
I was born and raised in Sunny Southern California. Even though Austin and I are currently living on the road and our home changes on a month-by-month basis, I have been fortunate to be able to travel back to the glorious Golden State and spend time with my family and friends over the summer. Along with adventures hiking to Knapp’s Castle and delicious acai bowl excursions, we also spent a day taking a mini California Road Trip from Los Angeles to Malibu and Santa Barbara.
Our first stop was Neptune’s Net. Picnic tables with an ocean view and the best fish tacos I’ve ever tasted make this iconic Malibu spot a must-visit whenever I’m back in California.

After we were full and happy and all tacos had been properly vanquished, we loaded back into the car and made our way to Santa Barbara.
Oh, McConnell’s, how I love thee. (It’s no secret that McConnell’s is my favorite ice cream in the Whole-Wide-World.) I hadn’t been to McConnell’s since my California Road Trip earlier this year and this was a delightful homecoming. It was a Double Scoop Kind of Day.
Eureka Lemon & Marionberries ALWAYS. It’s my all-time fave. This time I also got a scoop of Wiskey & Pecan Pralines just because I could. It’s the perfect California-Meets-Kentucky Combination that was pretty much the epitome of my summer living in Lexington.
Tacos. Check. Ice Cream. Check. Next we embarked upon our search for coffee.
Our hunt brought us to Handlebar Coffee Roasters in Downtown Santa Barbara.
As former professional cyclists, two wheels paved the way to many great opportunities. From racing in Europe, meeting each other, to arriving in Santa Barbara and calling it home. We switched gears in 2011 and directed our focus to roasting some of the best coffees in the world and offering them to you. Our goal is to link our appreciation for the coffee farmers to you, through each fresh roasted bag.
Our day trip of road tripping along was filled with tacos, ice cream, and coffee. California isn’t perfect (but really, what state is?) but it feels like home and it has the best food in the nation, bar none.
